MARINE CORPS AIR STATION, MIRAMAR

Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar: 10 miles north of Downtown San Diego, MCAS Miramar is home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and former location of the Navy's Topgun training program. The Miramar Air Show takes place at this location every year in October. MCAS Miramar offers a weekly tour program open to the public. The tours are free of charge and take place on Monday through Friday each week, weather and operational commitments permitting.

THE MARITIME MUSEUM

The Maritime Museum: The Maritime Museum of San Diego was founded in 1948 with the purpose of preserving San Diego's maritime heritage. It is located at the Embarcadero, on Harbor Drive between Market & Grape Streets, and includes five historic ships, including the Star of India.

MISSION TRAILS REGIONAL PARK

Mission Trails Regional Park: The Park encompasses nearly 5,800 acres of both natural and developed recreational acres. Started in 1974, Mission Trails Regional Park has become one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Over 40 miles of trails, boating on Lake Murray, camping at Kumeyaay Lake, numerous informative hikes, and a state-of-the-art Visitor & Interpretive Center.

MT. HELIX CROSS

Mt. Helix Cross: High atop Mt Helix is perched a wooden cross, erected in 1917 for an Easter service and an amphitheater. In order to preserve the historic cross, the area around it is currently owned by the San Diego Historical Society.

MT. SOLEDAD CROSS

Mt. Soledad Cross:  The original cross on Mt. Soledad was erected in 1913 to commemorate war veterans. In 1923 it was stolen, and another was put up in 1934, but blown down by winds. The concrete Latin cross was erected in 1958 and still stands (so far) in spite of "church-state religious symbol" lawsuits. The 43-foot cross and memorial currently sits on land owned by the federal government (transferred over in 2006) as a federal war memorial. However, in January 2011 the 9th Circuit delcared the cross "unconstitutional" and the controversy rages on...

OCOTILLO WELLS SVRA

Ocotillo Wells SVRA: An off-highway motor vehicle recreation area operated by California State Parks. This is a popular ATV, dune buggy, four-wheel drive and motorcycle use area. With 85,000 acres of desert terrain, the park has vault toilets, shade ramadas, picnic tables, and fire rings. No water available.

OLD GLOBE THEATER

Old Globe Theater: The Globe is at the forefront of the nation’s leading performing arts organizations. The Old Globe produces a year-round season of 15 plays and musicals on its three stages, including its highly-regarded Shakespeare festival. The Old Globe theater was built in Balboa Park for the presentation of abridged versions of Shakespeare's plays for the California Pacific International Expo of 1935. It was designed after Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London.

PALOMAR MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

Palomar Mountain State Park: This park features spectacular views of the Pacific, camping, picnicking, hiking, and fishing (trout) in Doane Pond. The park is off Highway 76, up Highway S6, then left on Highway S7 at the junction near the mountaintop.

PALOMAR OBSERVATORY

Palomar Observatory: A privately owned observatory located in the Palomar Mountain Range, at approximately 5,570 feet (1,700 m) in elevation. It is owned and operated by the California Institute of Technology. The observatory has several telescopes, the most well-known being the 200 inch Hale telescope.

PETCO PARK

Petco Park: An open-air ballpark located in downtown San Diego. It replaced Qualcomm Stadium, which was shared by the San Diego Padres and the San Diego Chargers. It opened in 2004, with a seating capacity of almost 43,000. The ballpark is located between 7th and 10th Avenues, south of J Street.

POINT LOMA LIGHTHOUSE, NEW

There are two lighthouses. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which is now a historical monument and the newer one which still operates.


New Point Loma Lighthouse:
The new lighthouse is 70 feet high with a skeletal tower construction and is located at the very tip of Point Loma, on Pelican Point, right at the edge of the water. It puts out a white flash every 15 seconds. The Lighthouse is owned by the Coast Guard, and is not open for touring.

POINT LOMA LIGHTHOUSE,  OLD

Old Point Loma Lighthouse: The Old Point Loma Lighthouse stood watch over the entrance to San Diego Bay for 36 years. Big problem--too much fog. In 1891 a new lighthouse was built at the tip of Point Loma. The interior of the Old Lighthouse has been refurbished to its historic 1880s appearance and Ranger-led talks, displays, and brochures are available to explain the lighthouse’s interesting past.

PRESIDIO PARK

Presidio Park: The 50-acre park is situated on a hill overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Bay, Mission Valley and the Pacific Ocean. The Old Presidio Historical Trail is a self guided walk with a moderate level of difficulty and is marked with signs that answer historical questions about the park along the way. The Serra Museum is located here.
