Sunset Cliffs Park & Beaches

Sunset Cliffs Park & Beaches is situated about 1 mile south of Ocean Beach; 60 feet above the Pacific Ocean, on the west border of Point Loma is a series of heavily eroded cliffs. In a couple of places, they have actually eroded into Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. At the intersection of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Ladera Street is a steep staircase leading down to the rocky beach. Just south of this intersection is Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. Filled with eucalyptus trees imported from Australia, this is a designated conservation area.

There are several beaches below the cliffs but access takes the skill of a mountain goat. The walking paths along the top is the best place to be--incredible view and fabulous photo opps. During winter you might even catch sight of a migrating gray whale. For you mountain goats...there are three beaches below the cliffs. Garbage Beach with very steep stairs (at Ladera St., lots of stinky kelp, best surf spot), No Surf Beach (between Hill & Froud Streets) and New Break Beach (south of Pt. Loma Nazaren College). The last 2 beaches have "citizen trails" leading down to the beaches, if you can even find them. On top if it, it has to be low tide or there is no beach. The surf is unpredictable, and not safe for kids. Warning: This area is dangerous and people have died trying to climb the cliffs. Don't try it.

Activities:
Boasting that you made it to the beach and back.

Cabrillo Monument

In 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer sailing for Spain, landed in what is now known as San Diego Bay. Nearly two million visitors come here every year to see the monument, the Point Loma Lighthouse, and to experience awesome views of the bay, the city of San Diego, and the Pacific Ocean. All around the area there are exhibits, plaques, info buttons to push, and an auditorium where short films are shown.

Ballast Point

Behind the Cabrillo Monument Visitor Center & below it is Ballast Point, a small piece of land where Cabrillo is believed to have come ashore.

Old Point Loma Lighthouse

The lighthouse was first put into use in 1855. There was a bit of a problem since it was built 462 feet above sea level. The beam was often obscured by low clouds, and wasn't visible by the ships. So, in 1891 a new lighthouse, Pelican Point, was built at the base of Point Loma, at sea level. This lighthouse is still in use today. The old lighthouse has been restored. Inside it you can see the furnished living quarters of a 19th Century lighthousekeeper and his family. Next door, the Assistant Keeper's Quarters contain exhibits about lighthouses.

Bayside Trail

Just east of the Monument you will see a well-marked road. In April and May there will be many plants in bloom which include lemonadeberry shrub, prickly pear cactus, yucca, sage, wildlife, and migratory birds. There are descriptive signs along the trail. From your vantage point there is a fantastic view of San Diego Bay. Keep in mind that all plants and animals in this area are protected. You may NOT pick the flowers or remove any plants.
