Beach & Ocean Beach Pier
Ocean Beach, "OB" to the locals, is a wide beach, nearly a mile long, located south of
the Mission Bay channel entrance. This beach has separate water areas reserved for swimming and
surfing, which makes it especially safe for the kids. This is a popular beach for volleyball, and
tournaments are played here. The volleyball courts are located near the north end of the beach
close to the public parking lots. Ocean beach has a casual atmosphere; a true Southern California
beach town. The beach attracts families, visitors, surfers, and a bevy of fishermen/women head for
the Pier. There are tidepools to explore south of the pier.
The Ocean Beach Municipal Pier is located at the south end of the beach and is open to
the public for just taking a walk, or doing some serious fishing. Fishing from the pier does not
require a fishing license, but catch regulations are enforced. There is a restaurant and bait shop
on the pier. Restaurants and surf shops are near the south end of the beach.
At the north end of the beach is Dog Beach, a dog run area where dogs are permitted to be
off-leash anywhere north of the bicycle path that terminates on the north edge of the Voltaire
Street parking lot.
